Cryptite is an arcane-conductive mineral found all over Solace in large clustered areas called 'reservoirs', which are promptly turned into mines for mass extraction. It's one of the most common minerals on the planet alongside quartz and feldspar, and its characteristics closely resemble the former. Cryptite is glass-like, translucent, and very difficult to break, requiring special tools to be mined, shaped, and polished. Its color varies on the arcane energy it's currently channeling, but its normal hue is white.
Cryptite can be found in 'reservoirs', which are enormous crystal clusters that protrude from the planet's crust. Some reservoirs possess arcane energy, making them more dangerous for mining, but most are inert and therefore white and safe.
Originally, the mineral was employed by mages only, as a means to store enchantments or improve energy focus. Gems were exclusively affixed to staffs, scepters, pendants, and other objects to ease the casting of a spell, thus increasing the output potency. However, the mineral has seen increased use since the Industrial Awakening in 3916, where it began its role as the world's primary source of power for machines.
Today, cryptite is the main fuel of all arcane technology. Its capability to store and conduct aspected magic allows for a myriad of applications, from generating electricity for settlements to powering engines, screens, and even firearms. Every functional piece of technology is driven by a cryptite gem, with an enchantment befitting its application.
Fire-enchanted gems, known as 'combustion crystals', provide energy to engines of all purposes and sizes, as well as firearms that aren't powered by kinetic crystals. Microphones have sound-amplifying enchantments, cellstones are cryptite slates with telepathic effects, and so on. Anything magic can do, cryptite can channel into a manmade system. Alternative fuels have been invented, such as gunpowder or coal and steam, but none are as widely employed as cryptite.
In fewer words, cryptite has become the world's all-purpose arcane battery. Its applicability has turned it into one of the most traded resources, single-handedly defining the wealth of nations, and their capability to develop in an era where the industry has begun its conquer for the entirety of Solace.
