Blackmouth refers to a barren tunnel system located in Queenstead, directly south of the Cotton Forest. The entrance to the abandoned mines collapsed long ago as the mine fell into disservice. The walls have evidence of sunless years as mushrooms and moisture gathered with the passing of time, although the inner structures yet reinforce the underground complex.
Roaming about, the sorrowful spirits loom as they work day and night with their ethereal pickaxes, fruitlessly chipping away at the ore deposits. Long ago, the mine was a sprawling mining village dug into the mountain side, its name given to the odd black rock that existed within the range. Thus, the entrance gave off the presence of an abyssal-black maw, ready to consume all who enter. No heed was paid to the mine’s warning of the darkness that dwelt below. The mine was successful enough to become notorious within the Kingdom, generating historical revenue.
One day, the miners came across a black-marble structure, buried deep within the mountain. It seemed as though the rock had been perfectly sealed so to shut off the structure. About a day’s trek deep into the mine the entrance to this Ancient Temple can be found. Its black-marble cuts resemble an ancient, sophisticated culture with extremely proficient technology and magic, especially as the countless archways, big and small, made up the temple itself.
At the center of the temple a floating gem resides atop an altar. The appearance of the gem was never known, as it transformed depending on those who gazed upon it. The unfortunate souls that look into the stone are brought into a trance-like mind-control as their souls are toyed with, and this the miners suffered from. They lost their minds, greedily fighting over the most precious gem in the world, and effectively created a tomb deep in the earth. Hundreds of bodies now surround the gem, while it continues to infest the mountain with deep-life overgrowth and darkness, claiming the territory for itself.
Even after all the centuries since the miners had wiped out the mine, as though the gem wishes to collect more visitors to its catacombs, gold grows like slow grass, as though the mineral was simply a plant to be watered to the Reality-Warping Gem created with foul cosmic magic long ago. The mine was shut down, and the gemstone sealed by mages of ancient times, to keep the Kingdom's inhabitants out of harm's way. This story is known by many, yet the foolish and greedy oft give in to the prospect of gold and riches.
Although Blackmouth is oft guarded by Lorian soldiers some casualties occur every year or so. Even still, none have dared to destroy the complex; its entrance now adorned by countless signs and warnings of danger.
