The Temporal Engine is the largest arcane machine in the Realm of Solace, created by and the National Research Bureau. Taking up an area of 26 square kilometres, it occupies a significant part of the uninhabited Lorian island to the northwest, housed deep underground and kept hidden from the public. The Temporal Engine is a space-time reading and altering machine built for the research of alternate overlapping instances in different planes of existence, such as , and the temporary realities created during episodes of .
The project was started and led by herself. Its exact location, architecture, and functionality, remains a secret protected by the state. Its existence was first publicly announced in 3997.
The Temporal Engine was recently the subject of worldwide controversy, after it was weaponized against a potentially hostile extraterrestrial species that arrived in a fleet of interstellar ships, invading national territory. Following their arrival, the population of began to experience brief hallucinations of unidentified individuals walking the city streets for seconds before disappearing. This event preceded an attack on The Elden Palace, where Nokron beasts were teleported into the main corridor and attacked several guards as they charged into the Chamber of Quartz. The Queen was injured by stray gunfire, but made a full recovery within the following weeks.
The Temporal Engine was fired in the wake of this attack. Its destructive capabilities, previously unknown by the world, earned it the title of the most dangerous weapon of mass-destruction in the history of mankind, as it literally erased the existence of the Nokron overnight, leaving no trace of their presence in the universe. The weapon's firing took place at 3:22 AM on the 15th of Martz 3998, an event dubbed 'The Night of the Fireflies' because of the strange orange flashes observed in the skies all over the Realm of Solace. A small percentage of the population reported seeing otherworldly structures falling into orbit and disintegrating before reaching the planet's surface.
Queen Alessia IV, and the entire , were highly criticized by the international media in the wake of this event. Though many praised the swift destruction of the Nokron, most countries condemned the creation and usage of a weapon that could erase Time itself, labeling the Queen as a tyrant that held the power to destroy the world. Several nations petitioned the ban of such weaponry, dozens banning Loria from international treaties and shutting down trade routes until the Temporal Engine was permanently disassembled. Protests making the same demand took place all over the Kingdom of Loria.
As of today, the Queen hasn't provided an official response, and the future of the Engine remains unknown.
